Nature's healing arts have been with us for
many centuries and can often be very powerful.
People looking for ways to enhance their health
have a wide array of options: hypnosis, herbs,
massage, energy balancing, reflexology, bodywork,
and aromatherapy are all excellent ways that
we can improve our health. The Native Americans
have used plant-based remedies for generations. Mikela
Licona of HealthWise Resources
is the only Professional Herbalist in Ames.
|
A graduate of the New Mexico College of
Natural Healing, she brings a fresh Southwestern
perspective on wellness.
Herbs should be recommended by a trained
practitioner, says Mikela. She
uses them in her Holistic Health Consultation
along with dietary advice, ear candling, cleanses,
and guided visualizations. One western remedy
is Chaparral, a plant with
anti-inflammatory properties which Mikela finds
helpful for arthritis relief.
Aromatherapy is the art and science of using
fragrant plant oils to enhance health. As an
addition to massage therapy, Diana
Risse, RN, LMT mixes Lavender
into hand-crafted Aromassage oils, lotions
and bath products to help her clients improve
mood, digestion, and respiration. She appreciates lavender because
of its versatility in relieving headache, stress,
and pain. Lavender is also a key ingredient
in Mother Earth Pillows, which are warmed to
bring out the therapeutic fragrance and placed
on the body. You are invited to visit HealthWise
Resources try herbs and fragrances for yourself. |

When HealthWise Resources opened in 2004, people
asked why it said Complementary Health Clinic on
the sign. (see back cover) They asked if it was a "Free
Clinic." While we enthusiastically support the
efforts of the YSS Free Clinic (see
* box below), that is not us. Complementary on
the sign is spelled with an e, not with the i of
complimentary or free. So what is Complementary Health?
Complementary Health treatment is intended to complement conventional
medical care, never replace it. We at HealthWise
Resources team with other professionals as requested
by our clients. The goal is optimal health in body,
mind, and spirit for all of our clients. Complementary
Health considers physical, mental, and spiritual
aspects of health to be interconnected. Complementary
Health is about whole person wellness.

Deep breathing
is important for health and overall well-being. It
can have a powerful influence on our health, yet
many of us only use a small portion of our breathing
potential. We need to realize that when in healthy
breathing, the up/down motion of the diaphragm, combined
with the out/in motion of the belly, ribcage, and
back, massages and detoxifies our organs, promotes
blood flow, digestion, and pumps our lymphatic system.
- Don't expect to make every breath deep,
but at least a few times daily give yourself some
good breaths.
- Lie or sit, maintaining good alignment. Your
body should be relaxed. Close the eyes and scan
the body for tension.
- Now place a hand on your abdomen and one on
your chest, noticing how your belly rises and falls.
- Breathe in slowly through your nose. Notice
if your chest is moving in harmony with your abdomen.
- Exhale even more slowly through the
mouth, keeping your tongue, and jaw relaxed. Relax
as you focus on the sound and feeling of long,
slow, deep breaths. Ahhh!

Question: My
husband owns a small business, and I worry
about his stress level. He can't seem to
settle down to sleep, so he never feels
rested in the morning. What do you advise?
- TJ, Zearing |
From the Wise Woman: Dear TJ, It
is vital that he learn to manage his stress, and
soon. Research has linked uncontrolled stress to
serious problems such as hypertension. Reiki or hypnosis
may be good starting points for your husband, because
many people find the results long-lasting. Also,
holistic health counseling with Mikela helps with
life-changing habit improvements, to withstand the
daily demands of work more easily.
Question: I have
had frequent, miserable headaches for 18 months.
I use medications, and even had injections into
my neck without lasting success. What else can
I do? - WH, Jefferson
From the Wise Woman: Dear WH,
The good news is there are almost too many good complementary
headache treatments. One possibility is craniosacral
therapy, a gentle kind of bodywork which balances
and realigns the areas of the skull, neck, and back.
Massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, herbology, and
reiki all help many clients. With so many therapies
to choose among, I suggest you try a Triple Treat
Package: 3 visits with 3 different HealthWise practitioners
for only $75, to find which is best for you.
Question: I am
the mother of 4 beautiful kids. I have an embarrassing
problem. Lately when I laugh or cough I'm afraid
I'll leak, and it seems to be getting worse. Do
I give up and wear pads, or is there a better solution?
- MR, Ames
From the Wise Woman: Dear MR,
You may have hidden pain which inhibits your natural
strength, or weak pelvic muscles from childbirth.
Both are very treatable. Before resigning yourself
to pads, try women's physical therapy with Ria Keinert,
an effective natural option for most women who try
it.
Question: I am
at a crossroads in my life. My current job doesn't
fit me any more, but I don't know if I want to
go back to school, try another job, or what. How
can I make the right choice? - GF, Boone
From the Wise Woman: Congratulations
GF, your time at the crossroads is an opportunity,
honor it! Hypnotherapy can help you. Ann Clausen's
Life Pathway Program takes you on a guided hypnotic
journey to your authentic self, to find the path
of your heart's desire. Best wishes during this important
life event.
