Judy Trumpy

Judy has practiced as a registered, licensed dietitian for over 36 years working in hospital settings, long-term care facilities, Iowa State University's Department of Residence as a Food Service Manager.  For the last 5 years and presently, Judy is available by appointment to provide nutrition counseling to ISU students and their dependents at the Thielen Student Health Center at ISU in Ames, Iowa. In addition, she is currently Nutrition Education Coordinator for ISU Dining, where she provides special diet information to ISU students and nutrition education to the general student body through ISU's website, presentations to student groups, or with printed material displayed in dining centers and other food venues across campus.

Judy graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition-Dietetics and served two year in the United States Army Medical Specialist Corps obtaining her dietetic internship and as Chief of Diet Therapy at U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Judy is a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Iowa Dietetic Association and is certified in Adult Weight Management.  She belongs to the Weight Management Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association.

In addition to working at ISU, Judy is providing Nutrition Counseling and Education to clients at the City of Ames, Parks and Recreation Department where she completes one-on-one nutrition counseling for healthy eating and disease risk management, conducts supermarket tours, and presents classes on healthy food habits for life.

She began her private practice in January 2006, and joined HealthWise Resources in September, 2006.  Her emphasis is on 'intuitive' or 'mindful' eating described briefly as being fully aware of when one is truly, biologically hungry and finishing eating before one becomes too full or satiated thus maintaining a healthy weight and lessoning the risk for disease development.

What is an RD/LD?

Registered Dietitians (RD) are individuals who have

  • completed the minimum of a Baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, or foreign equivalent;
  • met current minimum academic requirements as approved by The Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association;
  • completed a minimum of 900 supervised practice hours of preprofessional experience approved by The Commission on Accreditation/Approval for Dietetics Education of The American Dietetic Association;
  • successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietitians; and
  • accrued 75 hours of approved continuing professional education every five years.

The letters "LD" signify that the RD has successfully passed the State of Iowa licensure exam and is recognized as capable to practice all aspects of nutrition within the state.  Continuing education reporting hours are reported every two years to the State of Iowa Dietetic Examining Board for approval.

What is a "Nutrition Coach"?

A Nutrition Coach is an enthusiastic individual who has the knowledge and skills to listen, collaborate, devise, revise, and encourage the individual client in all aspects of their nutrition care and who recognizes when to refer the client on to another helping professional for additional treatment.  A coach is available not only by appointment but by mail, email and telephone to listen, answer questions, give feedback, make suggestions, and again, encourage the individual to continue on their quest for better health and well-being using the best available scientific knowledge.
